The Socceroos

I’m SO inspired!

The “Soccer-who’s” did what hardly anybody expected and more…

The Socceroos showed us on the ‘Big Stage’ how much more powerful TEAM and great character is over individual excellence.

They played one of the very best players in the world, Lionel Messi, as well as the team labeled as one of the “World Cup Giants”, Argentina, and showed us all an incredible performance and amazing fight all the way to the final minutes.

Over the coming months and years, I’m certain this story will be unpacked by many to uncover what Graham Arnold was able to instil in this team of individuals, as well as the character of this team of individuals during one of the most historically challenging times preparing for this World Cup with our Covid pandemic.

This is honestly, in my humble opinion, nothing short of amazing and every Australian should be so proud, but also leaders should turn their attention to this story and see what they can learn from this extraordinary and unlikely success…

Some little insights I’ve been able to find so far are:

  • “Arnold learnt from Hiddink that tactics are secondary to how you manage people.” and Guus Hiddink shares he told Arnold “You work with people, not machines,” Find the article about Graham Arnold here
  • In this article Graham Arnold also shared with the interviewer that he watched Ted Lasso (wink back to my recent post about Ted Lasso) and they both conclude that “when you put people first, the results usually follow.”

You can’t build a successful business around a few excellent “players”, you need to have the right culture to foster resilience and create transparent communication, trust, and teamwork so that not just one person, but EVERYONE in the team can thrive and help achieve the company’s vision, mission and goals.

As per this article “The Socceroos’ 2-1 loss against Argentina at the World Cup isn’t the end of a dream, it is the beginning of one”!
